A product of the Chicago Public Schools, attending Illinois Wesleyan University at age 16, Mary Melchor has lived and worked in Cook County for over 58 years.

EXPERIENCE
Mary Alice Melchor has been an attorney for 25 years and is licensed to practice in courts in Illinois, in the United States District Court for Northern District of Illinois, and before the United States Supreme Court. Mary is the Inspector General for the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County where she supervises investigations from outside agencies, customers and employees as they relate to the Clerk’s Office. Mary focuses on the concerns of citizens who feel they have not been treated fairly in the court system or the Clerk’s Office. Mary previously served the Clerk’s Office as the Associate Clerk of the County Bureau (2003-2005) and as the Chief Deputy Clerk in Maywood (2002-2003). Mary has worked as an insurance defense attorney with the Chicago Housing Authority and an in-house attorney for Liberty Mutual Insurance. She also worked as a private attorney, specializing in real estate, family and probate law. Mary has provided pro bono services for her fellow church members, senior citizens and indigent persons over her career.
The County Bureau includes the offices of the County, Chancery, Law and Probate Divisions and these four units were responsible for over $25 million in combined revenue for the Clerk’s Office. Mary’s primary responsibility was to make sure that all divisions were in compliance with the Illinois laws, the Supreme Court and Cook County Circuit Court rules, and the Clerk’s Office’s regulations, policies, and procedures. She supervised a total of 300 employees. Mary also served as Chief Deputy Clerk of District 4/Maywood, Illinois (Maybrook Courthouse) from April 2002 to August 2003.

EDUCATION
A product of the Chicago Public Schools, and a graduate of Morgan Park High School, Mary entered Illinois Wesleyan University at age 16 and earned a B.A. in French/Education. Later she earned an M.S. from Chicago State University in Special Education and an M.B.A. from Roosevelt University in management. Mary taught special education for C.P.S. for twelve years. In 1992, Mary received her Juris Doctorate from IIT/Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she also received their Professional Achievement Award in 2013. A seasoned entrepreneur, Mary is a licensed insurance broker who previously owned/operated Exchange Insurance Planners as well as a motel and a pest control business.

BAR ASSOCIATION LEADER
Mary has been an active member of several bar associations over the years including the National Bar Association (current Secretary/Treasurer of Region VII--IL/IN/WISC and treasurer of Women Lawyers Division), American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater Chicago (past president/current board member), Cook County Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association and Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (current board member). Mary also serves as the treasurer for the Women’s Bar Foundation (overseeing $1.5million in assets), as the treasurer of the Illinois Chapter of the Association of Inspectors General, and as the treasurer and legal consultant of the Cosmopolitan Community Church, where she has been a member for 41 years.

COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENTS
Mary has served on the Board of Directors of the Cosmopolitan Community Church of Chicago for over 25 years. She is very active in many committees and events at her church, including conducting legal workshops for the parishioners. Mary also volunteers at various women’s shelters in the city. Mary Alice Melchor was honored last year by the Chicago Defender Newspaper at its 2016 Women of Excellence Awards Luncheon Program. The Chicago Defender described their 50 honorees for 2016 by stating “We honor women who inspire others through their vision and leadership, exceptional achievements and participation in community service. They are women who exemplify stature, poise, grace and inner beauty.” Mary Melchor received the Woman of Excellence Award for her work with her community, her church, and legal organizations.
